How the word counter works
Our word counter analyzes your text in real time, directly in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so your writing stays private. Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace, characters are counted with and without spaces, and sentences are detected by terminal punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks.
Why word count matters
Many writing tasks come with limits. Students need to hit essay requirements, bloggers aim for SEO-friendly article lengths, and social media posts have strict character caps. A reliable counter helps you stay within those limits without guessing.
Typical length guidelines
- Tweet / X post: up to 280 characters
- Meta description: about 150–160 characters
- Blog post: 1,000–2,000 words for in-depth topics
- College essay: usually 500–650 words
- Email subject line: under 60 characters
Reading time estimate
Reading time is calculated using an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute. Technical or complex content may take longer, while light content is often read faster.
Tips for better writing
Short sentences are easier to read. Aim for an average sentence length of 15 to 20 words, break long paragraphs into smaller blocks, and remove filler words. Use the counter while editing to see how each change affects your total length.
Frequently asked questions
Does the tool store my text?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser and your text is never sent anywhere.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Both counts are shown: characters with spaces and characters without spaces.
Is there a limit to the text length?
There is no fixed limit. Very large texts may be slower depending on your device.
