The formula
If your current grade counts for (100 − w)% of the course and the final exam counts for w%, the final grade is: current × (1 − w) + exam × w. Solving for the exam score gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.
Example
You have 82% so far, the final is worth 30% and you want 85% overall. The needed score is (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
Study smart
- If the required score is high, focus on the topics with the most marks.
- Ask your teacher whether grades are rounded.
- Plan your study time backwards from the exam date.
