Four classic formulas

Doctors and researchers have proposed several formulas for an "ideal" body weight based only on height and sex. This calculator shows four of them side by side: Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964). They all start from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount for each inch above that height.

Why the results differ

Each formula was developed for a different purpose, such as estimating medication doses or screening patients, so their results differ by a few kilograms. Use them as a rough range rather than a single target.

The healthy BMI range

For a more flexible guide, the calculator also shows the weights that correspond to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, the range considered healthy for most adults.

Important

Ideal weight formulas ignore muscle mass, bone structure, age and fat distribution. Athletes or very muscular people may weigh more and still be perfectly healthy. Talk to a doctor if you are concerned about your weight.

Frequently asked questions

Is my ideal weight one exact number?

No. Healthy weight is a range, and different formulas give slightly different values.

Why does it say n/a for short heights?

The formulas are defined for heights above 5 feet. The BMI range is still shown.

Are these formulas suitable for children?

No. They are for adults only.
