How to work with fractions
- Add or subtract: bring both fractions to a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- Multiply: multiply the numerators and the denominators. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
- Divide: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
Simplifying
To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). The calculator does this automatically, so 6/12 appears as 1/2.
Mixed numbers and decimals
An improper fraction, where the numerator is larger than the denominator, can be written as a mixed number: 7/4 = 1 3/4. The decimal value is shown as well, which is useful for measurements and comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes. Put the minus sign on the numerator, for example −3 / 4.
Does it simplify the answer?
Yes, always, using the greatest common divisor.
Are decimals accepted?
Enter whole numbers in the numerator and denominator; the result also shows the decimal value.
